Hale CE Primary School- Curriculum Design- History

Our vision is founded on Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

At Hale CE Primary School, we regard History as an important subject as it strongly supports our overall curriculum intent. Through high-quality History teaching, we aim to raise children’s cultural capital, enabling them to aspire, dream big, and better understand the world in which they live.

History at Hale CE Primary School supports our commitment to “Be the Light” by nurturing pupils to be Ready, Respectful and Responsible. Through exploring the past, children develop a secure understanding of chronology, historical concepts and vocabulary, whilst learning to ask perceptive questions, think critically and evaluate evidence. This prepares them not only for future learning, but for active and thoughtful participation in society.

The History curriculum encourages pupils to appreciate diversity, recognise different perspectives over time and understand how people and events from the past have shaped the modern world, including comparisons between local, national and global contexts.

Be Ready

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

A History curriculum that develops children’s curiosity about the past and equips them with essential historical knowledge, enquiry skills and vocabulary, enabling them to confidently access increasingly complex historical concepts and ideas.

A History curriculum that helps children to understand and respect different cultures, beliefs and experiences, both past and present. Pupils learn to appreciate diversity and to recognise how historical events impact people in different ways.

A History curriculum that empowers children to think critically, form their own viewpoints and understand their role as informed citizens. Through learning from the past, children consider responsibility, cause and consequence, and the impact of decisions on communities and societies.

Curriculum Approach

History at Hale CE Primary School is taught as a discrete subject, ensuring that pupils have dedicated time to develop specific historical knowledge, skills and understanding. This approach enables clear progression and depth of learning across the school.

Throughout the academic year, children engage in at least three History units, which are deliberately sequenced to build upon prior learning. Local history is introduced early and revisited throughout the curriculum, allowing pupils to compare their locality with other historical periods and places.

Teaching focuses on:

  • Developing strong historical enquiry skills, including asking and answering historical questions

  • Secure understanding of chronology, using age-appropriate timelines

  • Use of precise historical vocabulary

  • Exploring cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and change over time

  • Building cultural capital through a wide range of historical topics, experiences and enrichment opportunities

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children develop early historical understanding through learning about their own lives, family history, significant events and changes over time, in line with the EYFS framework. In Key Stages 1 and 2, learning progressively aligns with the National Curriculum for History, ensuring coverage of statutory content by the end of each key stage.

Teachers create a safe, engaging learning environment where discussion, questioning and reflection are central. Rich language and subject-specific vocabulary are modelled and reinforced to support pupils in articulating their thinking and making meaningful connections.

Impact

The impact of the History curriculum at Hale CE Primary School is seen in pupils who:

  • Demonstrate secure historical knowledge and understanding

  • Use appropriate historical vocabulary with confidence

  • Ask thoughtful questions and show curiosity about the past

  • Make meaningful connections between historical periods, events and the modern world

Children’s progress and attainment in History are measured using a range of qualitative and quantitative approaches, including book scrutiny, lesson observations, pupil voice, performance data from starting points, and ongoing teacher assessment. Monitoring ensures that History teaching remains high-quality, inclusive and aligned with the school’s overall curriculum intent.
