Religious Education

Hale CE Primary School- Curriculum Design- RE

Our vision is founded on Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

At Hale CE Primary School, Religious Education is central to our Christian vision and plays a vital role in pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Through high-quality RE, pupils are encouraged to “Be the Light” by developing understanding, curiosity, compassion and respect for others.

Our RE curriculum aims to inspire pupils to explore big questions about life, belief, meaning and identity, helping them to understand Christianity and other world religions and worldviews, while reflecting thoughtfully on their own values and beliefs. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus and guided by the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus, our curriculum enables pupils to flourish as reflective, respectful and responsible members of an increasingly diverse society.

Be Ready

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

A Religious Education curriculum that equips pupils with the knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills need to explore Christianity as the majority faith in Britain, alongside Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism, Buddhism and non-religious worldviews. Pupils learn how beliefs are expressed through sacred texts, worship, values and lived practice, enabling them to think deeply and ask informed questions about faith and meaning.

A Religious Education curriculum that explicitly teaches respect, empathy and open-mindedness. Pupils are encouraged to listen carefully to different viewpoints, recognise diversity within and between religions, and engage in thoughtful dialogue. This supports mutual respect and understanding, helping pupils appreciate the richness of belief within their school, local community and the wider world.

A Religious Education curriculum that empowers pupils to reflect on moral choices, values and responsibilities. Through exploring religious and ethical teachings, pupils consider how beliefs influence actions and responses to issues such as justice, compassion, forgiveness, stewardship and community. This supports pupils in developing a strong moral compass and a sense of responsibility towards others and the world.

Curriculum Approach

Religious Education at Hale CE Primary School is taught as a discrete subject, in line with statutory requirements and the school’s Church of England foundation, while also making meaningful links to worship, SMSC and wider curriculum themes where appropriate.

Our RE curriculum is based on the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus (2021) and follows the Field of Enquiry approach, which enables pupils to:

  • Know and understand religious beliefs, practices and worldviews

  • Express ideas and insights about meaning, values and identity

  • Gain and deploy skills of enquiry, reflection, interpretation and evaluation

Christianity is studied progressively and in depth across all key stages, alongside planned and sequenced study of other major world religions and non-religious worldviews, ensuring breadth, balance and progression.

Teaching is enquiry-led and discussion-rich, using high-quality questioning to deepen understanding and promote critical thinking. Pupils are encouraged to make connections between beliefs and lived experiences, including their own. Adaptations and scaffolds ensure that all pupils, including those with additional needs, can access the curriculum and succeed.

Impact

The impact of our Religious Education curriculum is evaluated through:

  • Book scrutiny and evidence of progression in knowledge, vocabulary and depth of response

  • Pupil voice, demonstrating confidence in discussing beliefs and reflecting respectfully

  • Observations of high-quality dialogue, questioning and reflection

  • Staff reflection on curriculum coverage, progression and inclusion

By the time pupils leave Hale CE Primary School, they are thoughtful, informed and respectful individuals who can articulate their own beliefs while appreciating the beliefs of others. They demonstrate an understanding of how religion and worldviews shape people’s lives and contribute positively to a diverse and cohesive society, living out our vision to “Be the Light”.
