Hale CE Primary School- Curriculum Design- PE

Our vision is founded on Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

At Hale CE Primary School, we believe that Physical Education plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ physical, emotional, social and mental well‑being. Our PE curriculum is designed to promote the development of key skills, confidence and enjoyment through participation in a broad range of games, activities and sports.

PE supports our commitment to “Be the Light” by enabling pupils to become Ready, Respectful and Responsible learners. Through PE, children develop resilience, teamwork, perseverance and self‑belief, whilst learning the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle.

The PE curriculum at Hale CE Primary School is underpinned by the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work, which provides a progressive and coherent framework from the Early Years through to Year 6. This ensures that pupils build secure foundations in physical literacy, knowledge and vocabulary, whilst developing positive attitudes towards physical activity that will support them throughout their lives.

Be Ready

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

A PE curriculum that develops pupils’ physical competence, confidence and enjoyment, enabling them to access a wide range of physical activities and to apply skills successfully in increasingly challenging contexts.

A PE curriculum that promotes teamwork, fairness and sportsmanship. Pupils learn to follow rules, respect others, work cooperatively and celebrate both personal and shared success.

A PE curriculum that encourages pupils to take responsibility for their own health and well‑being, developing resilience, self‑discipline and an understanding of the impact of physical activity on both body and mind.

Curriculum Approach

Physical Education is taught regularly across the school and is guided by the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work, which aligns fully with the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and the National Curriculum for PE. The scheme supports clear progression and sequencing of skills, knowledge and vocabulary from EYFS to the end of Key Stage 2.

The curriculum provides structured opportunities for pupils to:

  • Develop fundamental movement skills, including agility, balance and coordination

  • Participate in a broad range of physical disciplines, including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, fitness and outdoor and adventurous activities

  • Engage in competitive and cooperative activities, appropriate to age and stage

  • Build understanding of rules, tactics and strategies

  • Reflect on performance and identify ways to improve

In the Early Years, Get Set 4 PE supports physical development through structured play, movement, and interaction, helping children to develop confidence, control and coordination.
In Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils extend and apply these skills in increasingly complex activities, learning how to link movements, evaluate performance and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

The Get Set 4 PE scheme supports inclusive practice through clear success criteria, progressive lesson design and opportunities for adaptation, ensuring that all pupils can access, enjoy and succeed in PE lessons.

Impact

The impact of PE at Hale CE Primary School is evident in pupils who:

  • Are physically active, engaged and motivated

  • Demonstrate improving physical skills, confidence and coordination

  • Understand the importance of health, fitness and well‑being

  • Show resilience, teamwork, respect and positive attitudes towards challenge

Pupils’ progress in PE is monitored through teacher assessment, observation and pupil voice, supported by the assessment tools and progression frameworks embedded within the Get Set 4 PE scheme. This ensures that teaching is progressive, inclusive and closely aligned with the school’s wider curriculum intent.
