The Harbour

Welcome to The Harbour. Here at Hale CE Primary School, we are proud to offer a highly specialist Speech and Language Base for our most wonderful and unique learners. The base is deigned to meet the needs of children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). Our provision ensures every child receives the tailored support they need to thrive both academically and socially. Currently, the children are support by the base teacher, Mrs Pauls and Teaching Assistant, Miss Bailey.

Our aim is simple: to help every child, 'Be the Light' - building confidence, communication, happiness and a love of learning.

We believe that every child deserves to be understood, valued and empowered to communicate in their own unique way. Through nurturing relationships, specialist support and high expectations, we help every child find their voice, build confidence and shine as an active member of our school community.

Curriculum

We have a multisensory approach to our curriculum to stimulate, engage and support children with their learning. The children's individual EHCPs and recommendations from external agencies including Speech and Language Therapists (SALTs) inform our planning and aspects of our unique curriculum are always adapted to suit the individual needs of our learners. Our sensory curriculum is lots of fun ... and very messy!

Our enthusiastic learners may look like they are just having fun but we are working hard on so many skills:

Our curriculum is carefully considered, allowing us to deliver a bespoke curriculum that focuses on developing communication skills alongside core learning. The curriculum pathways are organised by stage, not age, meaning we are able to math provision to each child's developmental needs rather than their chronological age. The children benefit from this personalised approach within the resource base.

Teaching

With an emphasis on teaching language skills, we use a variety of resources including; visual prompts, colourful semantics, Widgit (Communication in Print), Makaton and visual symbol learning tools. Throughout the school, there will be small group teaching activities and one to one teaching time. We follow The Core Word Programme to introduce new vocabulary that all children can access with new skills continually broken down into small, achievable steps.

We work in close partnership with parents, carers, and external professionals to ensure every child has access to the most appropriate provision. Families are kept informed of progress every step of the way because we believe collaboration is key to success.
