Reading:

Children will be given a phonics reading book (these are indicated by 'letters and sounds' being written in the top right corner of the book) and a scheme book of their choice which they may need help to read. We will change the phonics books every Monday and Thursday and the scheme book will be changed once on a Monday.

We aim to read with all children atleast once per week but expect them to read a few pages every night at home. Please record when your child has read to you in their reading record. The children also have access to Bug club so please use this to supliment the reading books we send home (login details are in the back of their reading records).

Please make sure your child brings in their reading record and reading books to school everyday.

Phonics:

Phonics teaches children how to read and write and is a huge part of the learning in Year 1. The children have been learning phonics since they were in Nursery. We teach the children a series of sounds which they can then use to segment and blend words they would like to read and write. The children's reading books directly link to the phonics sounds they know so it is crucial that they practice reading their books as often as they can. At the end of Year 1 the children will be part of a national phonics screening check in which they read a series of real and alien words to the class teacher. This allows us to assess their phonetical ability. We will hold a parent meeting about this in the spring term.
