Children will be given a phonics reading book (these are indicated by 'letters and sounds' being written in the top right corner of the book) and a scheme book of their choice which they may need help to read. We will change the phonics books every Monday and Thursday and the scheme book will be changed once on a Monday.

We aim to read with all children atleast once per week but expect them to read a few pages every night at home. Please record when your child has read to you in their reading record. The children also have access to Bug club so please use this to supliment the reading books we send home (login details are in the back of their reading records).

Please make sure your child brings in their reading record and reading books to school everyday.

Phonics teaches children how to read and write and is a huge part of the learning in Year 1. The children have been learning phonics since they were in Nursery. We teach the children a series of sounds which they can then use to segment and blend words they would like to read and write. The children's reading books directly link to the phonics sounds they know so it is crucial that they practice reading their books as often as they can. At the end of Year 1 the children will be part of a national phonics screening check in which they read a series of real and alien words to the class teacher. This allows us to assess their phonetical ability. We will hold a parent meeting about this in the spring term.

Autumn 1

Our English lessons are based on a half termly book.

To begin this half term we will be reading 'In every house on every street'. The children will practice writing words and then learn how to form sentences.

We will then begin to look at our pathways to write book (Lost and Found) and build up upon the children’s punctuation skills to include capital letters and full stops. We will finish the half term by writing a short story.

Below are the areas of maths that we will be covering this half term:

•Numbers to 10.
•Number formation.
•Part whole within 10.
•Addition and subtraction within 10.

Science - Ourselves

Children will learn about different body parts and how they relate to our senses. The children will also explore each of the senses separately.

Homes in WW2

Children will explore the similarities and differences between our homes and homes in WW2. They will look at the objects around the home, food and clothing.

What is my place like? Home and school.

Following on from the previous topic we will then begin to look at geographical features of the school. We will also spend time considering the weather in our place.

R.E. - Harvest

Children will learn how we help those who do not have a good harvest. They will also look at the Jewish Harvest (Sukkot)

Children will be learning different methods of travel. They will be running, skipping, hopping and jumping individually and in sequence. The children will also be trying  games from the past in keeping with our topic.

Children will have use of the in-class computers and iPads. We will be learning about the parts of a computer and how to use the basic controls. We will also be spending some time looking at how to stay safe online.

In Music the children will be following a program called Charanga. The units they will cover are called ‘Hey You’ and ’Rhythm in the way we walk’. The children will learn new songs, find the pulse of the music and play instruments.
