Hale CE Primary School- Curriculum Design- Music |
Our vision is founded on Matthew 5: 14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16) |
At Hale CE Primary School, we believe that Music is a universal language that inspires creativity, self-expression and confidence. Music plays a vital role in helping pupils develop emotionally, socially and culturally, while also contributing to academic success. Through a high-quality music education, we inspire pupils to “Be the Light” by finding their own musical voice and developing a lifelong appreciation of music. Our curriculum enables pupils to perform, listen to, compose and evaluate music while understanding how music reflects the cultures and communities of the world. Music at Hale CE Primary School is delivered using the Charanga Musical School scheme, which provides a progressive, engaging and inclusive approach to music education. Charanga supports both specialist and non-specialist teachers in delivering confident, high-quality music lessons that prioritise singing, playing, composing and listening. Through Charanga, pupils are given regular opportunities to develop technical musical skills alongside creativity and personal expression, ensuring that every child can participate fully and successfully in music-making. Music at Hale CE Primary School is further enriched through partnership working with music specialists and external agencies, including Halton Sing!, local music providers and visiting practitioners. These partnerships extend pupils’ musical experiences beyond the classroom, providing opportunities to work with skilled musicians, participate in performances and develop vocal and instrumental technique. |

Curriculum Approach | Music at Hale CE Primary School is taught using the Charanga Musical School scheme, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum for Music and provides a carefully sequenced progression from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 2. Charanga’s structured units ensure that musical learning builds progressively over time while allowing flexibility to adapt lessons to meet the needs of our pupils. Lessons provide regular opportunities for pupils to:
Charanga integrates digital tools and high-quality musical resources to support creativity, engagement and inclusive participation. The scheme supports assessment for learning and provides guidance to differentiate lessons for less confident learners and those requiring additional challenge. Music technology is used where appropriate to enhance pupils’ musical understanding and performance. In addition to class‑based teaching through the Charanga Musical School scheme, Hale CE Primary School enhances its Music provision through ongoing collaboration with external music specialists and organisations, including Halton Sing!. These partnerships support high‑quality singing development, ensemble work and performance opportunities, enabling pupils to apply their musical learning in authentic contexts. Visiting musicians and music leaders work alongside staff and pupils to raise standards, broaden musical exposure and inspire pupils through expert modelling and live music‑making. |
Impact | The impact of our Music curriculum is evaluated through performance, participation and pupil voice, including:
By the time pupils leave Hale CE Primary School, they are confident, enthusiastic musicians who can perform, compose and evaluate music with understanding. They develop a lasting enjoyment of music, an appreciation of its cultural significance, and the confidence to participate in musical experiences both in school and beyond. |
