Art

Hale CE Primary School- Curriculum Design- Art

Our vision is founded on Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

At Hale CE Primary School, we recognise Art and Design as a powerful means through which children can express creativity, develop confidence, and explore their identity and the wider world. Through a carefully designed, bespoke Art curriculum, we inspire pupils to “Be the Light” by fostering originality, resilience, and appreciation of diversity. Our curriculum enables pupils to develop practical skills, a strong visual vocabulary, and an understanding of the role art plays across cultures, communities, and history, helping them to flourish both creatively and personally.

Be Ready

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

An Art curriculum that equips children with the technical skills, subject knowledge, and creative confidence needed to explore drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, collage, and mixed media. Pupils are taught to experiment, take risks, and reflect on their work, enabling them to articulate ideas visually and verbally while developing a secure understanding of artistic processes and techniques

An Art curriculum that places representation, inclusion, and cultural awareness at its heart. Our bespoke curriculum introduces pupils to a wide range of diverse artists, including artists from different cultures, backgrounds, time periods, genders, and artistic traditions. This ensures that all pupils can see themselves reflected in the curriculum while developing respect for the artistic contributions of others and an appreciation of difference. Pupils are encouraged to discuss artwork thoughtfully, valuing multiple viewpoints and interpretations

An Art curriculum that empowers pupils to take ownership of their creative choices and encourages responsible attitudes towards materials, tools, and the environment. Through exposure to artists who explore themes such as identity, sustainability, and social change, pupils begin to understand how art can be used as a voice for positive action and responsibility within society.

Curriculum Approach

Art and Design at Hale CE Primary School is taught largely as a discrete subject, ensuring that pupils have the time and focus needed to develop high-quality artistic knowledge and skills. Opportunities for meaningful cross-curricular links are also planned where appropriate, enriching learning across the wider curriculum.

Our bespoke Art curriculum has been carefully designed to:

  • Build progressive skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles, collage, and mixed media

  • Explicitly teach and revisit key artistic vocabulary and techniques

  • Introduce pupils to a diverse range of artists, both contemporary and historical, from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds

Pupils learn about artists purposefully selected to broaden cultural capital, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate creativity in all its forms. Teaching emphasises exploration, experimentation, evaluation, and reflection, allowing pupils to develop independence and a strong creative voice.

Teachers create a safe, supportive learning environment where children feel confident to take creative risks, make mistakes, and refine their ideas. Effective questioning and discussion are used to deepen understanding, support critical thinking, and help pupils make connections between their own work and that of the artists they study. Adaptations and scaffolds ensure that all pupils, including those with additional needs, can access and succeed within Art and Design.

Curriculum Approach

The impact of our Art curriculum is measured through a range of qualitative approaches, including:

  • Book and portfolio scrutiny to show progression of skills and creativity

  • Photographic evidence and reflective evaluation of pupils’ work

  • Pupil voice, demonstrating confidence, enjoyment, and understanding of artistic concepts and artists

  • Staff reflection on curriculum coverage, inclusion, and progression

By the time pupils leave Hale CE Primary School, they are confident, reflective artists who can discuss their work and the work of others thoughtfully. They demonstrate pride in their achievements, an appreciation of artistic diversity, and an understanding of how Art contributes to individual expression and the wider world.
