Hale CE Primary School- Curriculum Design- Science

Our vision is founded on Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

At Hale CE Primary School, we believe that Science is a vital part of the curriculum and plays a key role in helping our children understand the world that God has created. Through a high-quality science education, we inspire pupils to “Be the Light” by developing curiosity, resilience, and critical thinking, preparing them to become informed, responsible citizens in an ever-changing world. Our science curriculum enables pupils to develop secure scientific knowledge, engage confidently in enquiry, and understand how science impacts their lives, society, and the future of the planet.

Be Ready

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

A Science curriculum that equips all children with the knowledge, vocabulary, and enquiry skills required to explore, question and understand scientific concepts across biology, chemistry, and physics. Pupils develop the confidence to think scientifically, ask questions, plan investigations, and explain their understanding, enabling them to be lifelong learners who are ready for future scientific and technological challenges.

A Science curriculum that nurtures respect for the natural world, for evidence, and for the contributions of scientists past and present. Pupils are encouraged to work collaboratively, listen to others’ ideas, challenge misconceptions respectfully, and understand the ethical implications of scientific advancement, including environmental sustainability and climate responsibility.

A Science curriculum that empowers every child to take responsibility for their learning and for the world around them. Through meaningful scientific enquiry and real-world contexts, pupils consider how science influences decision-making, innovation, and environmental stewardship, encouraging them to act responsibly and aspire towards future STEM pathways.

Curriculum Approach

Our Science curriculum follows the Developing Experts programme, ensuring a knowledge-rich, coherently sequenced curriculum that is fully aligned with the National Curriculum. Units are carefully structured to allow pupils to build, revisit, and deepen their understanding over time, supporting long-term retention and conceptual clarity.

Teaching places a strong emphasis on working scientifically, with pupils engaging in practical investigations, observations, data collection, and testing predictions using a range of enquiry types.

Impact

The impact of our Science curriculum is measured through a range of qualitative and quantitative strategies, including:

  • Book scrutiny and curriculum mapping

  • Assessment through Developing Experts quizzes and end-of-unit outcomes

  • Lesson observations, learning walks, and pupil voice

  • Analysis of progression in scientific knowledge, skills, and vocabulary

Pupils leave Hale CE Primary School with a secure understanding of key scientific concepts, the ability to think and work scientifically, and a genuine sense of curiosity and wonder about the world. They are confident communicators, able to explain scientific ideas clearly, and are well prepared for future learning in science and related disciplines.
