Mathematics

Hale CE Primary School- Curriculum Design- Mathematics

Our vision is founded on Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

At Hale CE Primary School, we believe that Mathematics is a vital life skill that empowers pupils to make sense of the world around them. Through a mastery-based mathematics curriculum, we inspire children to “Be the Light” by developing confidence, resilience and logical thinking. Our Mathematics curriculum ensures that all pupils acquire secure foundational knowledge, deepen conceptual understanding, and develop the ability to reason and problem solve effectively, preparing them for future learning and everyday life.

Be Ready

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

A Mathematics curriculum that equips all pupils with secure number sense, fluency and conceptual understanding, enabling them to approach mathematical learning with confidence. Through carefully sequenced learning and revisiting prior knowledge, pupils develop the skills needed to apply mathematics across a range of contexts, ensuring they are ready for future challenges and progression within the curriculum.

A Mathematics curriculum that promotes collaboration, mathematical talk and respect for different strategies. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, listen to others’ viewpoints, and value mistakes as part of the learning process. Through whole-class and paired discussion, children learn to justify methods, challenge reasoning respectfully, and recognise that problems can be solved in multiple ways.

A Mathematics curriculum that supports pupils in taking responsibility for their learning by developing perseverance, accuracy and independence. Children are encouraged to reflect on their understanding, evaluate strategies, and take ownership of improving their mathematical thinking. This fosters a positive learning attitude and prepares pupils to apply mathematical skills responsibly in real-life situations.

Curriculum Approach

Mathematics at Hale CE Primary School is taught through a mastery approach, using the White Rose Maths Hub scheme as the core structure for planning and progression. This ensures clear sequencing of learning through small, logical steps that allow pupils to develop deep and secure understanding before moving on to new concepts.

White Rose Maths places number at the heart of learning, ensuring early number knowledge is fully embedded and revisited regularly. The curriculum prioritises depth over breadth, enabling pupils to explore mathematical concepts thoroughly and make meaningful connections between different content domains.

Teaching is underpinned by the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, allowing pupils to:

  • Explore concepts using concrete resources and manipulatives

  • Represent ideas pictorially through models, images and diagrams

  • Apply understanding abstractly using symbols and formal methods

Fluency, reasoning and problem solving are embedded within every lesson, with pupils regularly encouraged to explain their thinking using precise mathematical vocabulary. To ensure a rich and diverse range of problems, teachers also draw on NCETM materials to further deepen reasoning and promote connections across concepts.

Lessons are carefully adapted to meet the needs of all learners through scaffolding, variation and challenge. A positive classroom culture is established where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning, supporting pupils to develop resilience and confidence in mathematics.

Impact

The impact of our Mathematics curriculum is evaluated through a range of qualitative and quantitative measures, including:

  • Ongoing formative assessment within lessons

  • End-of-term assessments completed linked to NFER

  • Book scrutiny and learning walks to evidence progression and depth

  • Pupil voice, demonstrating confidence, fluency and enjoyment in mathematics

By the time pupils leave Hale CE Primary School, they demonstrate strong number fluency, secure conceptual understanding, and the ability to reason and solve problems with confidence. They are resilient learners who can articulate mathematical thinking clearly and apply skills effectively across the curriculum and in everyday life.
